What Do You Want?
II like to learn by analyzing the lives of others. One of the questions I like to ask is “What is one thing this person could to improve their life, to be happy, and to be successful in all that they do?”
The answer is always the same. |They should make a daily habit of asking themselves what they want.
Vectors
When I studied physics, one of the concepts that I found fascinating was vectors. When people ask the question “How long will it take to get from point A to point B?” they immediately think about the speed. “Well, how fast are you going?” While this might seem like the right answer, this is one extra and important part.
The answer to that question is the difference between working hard and getting nowhere, and getting results. A better question to ask is “How fast are you going towards your destination?”
The answer to that question requires two things: knowing what your destination is, and what the best path there is. Where are you trying to go?
Without answering, both of these people find themselves stuck. Either they spend their lives unclear of their destination, and they wonder why their lives never change, or they find they are going fast and working very hard, not getting anywhere, and wondering why their lives don’t change.
Where Do You Want?
What do you want? If you had a magic wand or God could do whatever you want, what would you ask for?
This question is important because it first establishes where you want to go. The path immediately becomes clearer. How can you improve your life if you don’t know how you want your life improved?
We Are Always Deciding
Acknowledging what you want will help you see the opportunities in life. We are always making choices. Life is always changing and presenting us with opportunities. When something comes up in life, being conscious of what you want makes it easier to make decisions. When you know your destination, you can choose the paths that seem to lead to your destination.
Establishing Self-Worth
I think one of the biggest challenges people face is self-worth. They have just given up that they can have what they want. They assume that getting what they want is difficult. They are discouraged. They feel defeated by life. They feel lost. Life seems unpleasant. They live not to die.
Asking yourself, “What do I want?” is an action that states, “What I am and what I want matter.” That alone is a powerful force, and getting life moving the way you want. This is a way to express your self-worth and your worthiness to the universe, God, or your soul, whatever term you want to use.
Don’t Know What You Want?
If you don’t know what you want, remember that there is always something that you can want. In this case, you may want to know what you want. You can simply want to be happy. You can want money. You can want anything. Be honest with yourself. Maybe you want others in your life to be happy or change. You can want that. You can want anything. Maybe you want a peaceful world. It’s up to you.
Don’t worry about whether you think it’s possible or not. Just be honest about what you want.
I Remind Myself
When I look back on the past and the things that I wanted, I am surprised by how often I have received what I wanted, even when at the beginning it seemed impossible and just a dream. What I find most fascinating is that after the fact, it seems obvious, and like not a big deal. However, before, these things seemed like impossibilities.
What Do You Want?
Ask yourself every day, “What do I want?” And it helps to write it down.
