V1: A Plan For Trains

A simple photo of me.

This is part of my series on how I want us to be better than Switzerland. One of the things that I want is better trains, and here is a summary of the requirements that we have developed so far. This is version 1.

  1. Respect the current system. We’re not to eliminate cars. Ideally, the plan would make driving even better and benefit energy supplies even more.

  2. Trains should be accessible, within 5-10 minutes of someone’s home.

  3. Trains should be comfortable and at least as nice as Swiss trains.

  4. We want a unified solution that doesn’t take sides. This is for all of us, not at the cost of any group, company, or political party.

  5. The view should be nice. It’s not enough that trains exist; the view while taking one should be enjoyable. Instead of, for example, putting it in bad parts of town or along a busy highway.

  6. They should be very clean.

  7. Stations should be attractive.

  8. A spiderweb design that makes it easy to get from one place to another instead of a single central hub. Hubs should be more distributed.

  9. Easy access to grocery stores. Doing large shopping should be possible. Since homes in the US are often spread out, when they shop, they have to bring home more than they can easily carry.

  10. Trains should be clean or not emit.

  11. Trains should be quiet inside or out.
